Buy American? Print E-mail
With all the fuss about reduced auto sales and Big Three bailout billions, the cry to "Buy American" has grown louder and more strident. But what exactly does that mean?

Here's a little quiz to demonstrate the complexity of the question. You may be surprised at the results. (My own score will remain secret, thank you.)

Want the car with the most domestic content? The 2008 Crown Vic has the highest percentage of North American content. It is also assembled in Canada. The Pontiac G8 (not named for the economic summit) is made down under in Australia.

Cell Mates Print E-mail
EVs aren't a mainstream market reality yet, but several auto makers are looking at the high voltage vehicle battery business as a potentially significant new source of revenue.

These guys have more brass than a Mississippi gambler, wagering their fortunes on an electric vehicle future. If gas returns to four bucks (or more), we may need these men and others like them.
Personally, I am weary of the current "can't do" attitude taken by many automotive traditionalists, and get a rush of excitement listening to can-do guys like these two.

New Car Sales Slow - Repairs Booming Print E-mail
Years ago, many dealers had no interest in the "back end," neglecting their parts and service operations. I remember one particularly ornery owner who told the entire service department that he would love to fire us all and open a lumber yard in the service area. Ouch.

Over the years, a younger breed of owner has emerged; many of this group have better business skills. Now, it looks like sharp-minded dealers are looking to survive the pain of slow new car sales by capitalizing on fixing the existing fleet. We sure hope this is good for working techs at both dealerships and independent shops!
